About New Pathways

Margaret Burns and Cheryl Gray established New Pathways, Inc. in Cambridge, Minnesota in 2000 as an all-encompassing resource for families experiencing homelessness.

The Path to Home shelter program was established in 2002, when New Pathways began partnering with area churches to provide safe shelter where families experiencing homelessness could eat and spend the night. We currently partner with over 18 churches who provide at least 200 hours of service each week to support the families and children we serve. During the day New Pathways provides a place where families can search for housing, employment, get connected with community resources, do laundry, and take a shower. Through safe shelter coupled with case management, advocacy, referrals, and support to build skills that address the complex challenges our families face, we work together to secure permanent housing and get them quickly reconnected to our community. A 6-month follow-up program is offered to families that leave the program. Within the 6-month follow-up program, families will continue to receive all services, such as case management, skills training, and personal care items on an as needed basis through a weekly phone call.  We serve Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, and Pine counties.

In 2006, the program expanded to Little Falls before moving its second location to Brainerd. This location followed the same model as Cambridge, with families staying at churches in one-week rotations. New Pathways was a part of the Brainerd community for over 10 years, providing shelter and services to 386 families in need. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the program lost its rental space and funding in 2019.

In 2010, New Pathways expanded to provide supportive housing services to long-term homeless families. New Pathways partnered with MetroPlains Management to provide support services to six long-term homeless families at Normandy Townhomes in Cambridge. In 2013, services expanded to cover four additional units at Heritage Townhomes in Cambridge. In 2024, we will partner with Reuter Walton to provide support services to an additional 14 site-based supportive housing units; 8 for high-priority homeless and 6 for people with disabilities. An on-site case manager is available full time to provide assistance in developing a strong tenant-landlord relationship and to connect the families with resources in the community.
